old now but
relevant as kennels still dont get inspected by an independent
authority. One
of the main problems is the fact that the greyhound racing industry is
self policing (you only have to look at the what the UK and
other banks get up to
to how how good self regulation is) so the GBGB controls all important
information about the greyhounds. If you follow this link and read the
GBGB Retirement Form - it clearly allows for the destruction of a
greyhound simply because the injury is not treated on economic grounds
(Section D) Its a Data Capture form and so the GBGB will have all this
information easily accessible. It also allows for destruction other
than by a vet! Poole stadium racing results can be seen here: Interestingly enough the RGT (Retired Greyhound Trust
also setup and funded by the industry) website states:
Q3 How many greyhounds has the charity rehomed? Each year approximately 9,000 greyhounds retire from racing. In 2002, the Trust found 2,030 homes for greyhounds. This figure has increased progressively and the Trust now finds over 4,000 homes for greyhounds a year (4,247 in 2010). In 2010 the Trust was proud to rehome its 50,000th greyhound. Which by their own admission means that half of all retiring hounds simply vanish! How can one be proud of "rehoming 50,000 greyhounds" when going on their own figures 50,000 or more have been destroyed during the same time period.
